Schoolism Live 2018: Painting Demo

This year I had the opportunity to join Schoolism Live in London and Berlin. I went step by step through a common production assignment and showed the audience where they can divert from the common path to allow themselves to put their own personal experience into their professional artwork without derailing the production goals. The class ended with taking those ideas and completing a live painting demo.

Here is the completed product from those talks along with the cute little racoon that played the mascot in the lecture portion of the class.

The final stage was to use adjustment layers to convert the overcast scene into a directly lit scene.

Neutral Diffuse Base Painting:
The majority of my time is spent blocking in and understanding a neutral diffuse lit version of the scene. This allows me to understand form, materials and local colors in the scene before moving on to the final image.

Block In:
The first thing I want to do is completely fill the canvas. If I don't do that then I usually find myself fighting the value contrasts created by the empty white canvas.

This stage is a simplification stage for me. My only real goal is that the composition and content supports the original idea and intention of the concept.
